Softbank has announced the launch of “Softbank 4G” commercial service from February 24, 2012 initially in three major cities. The initial network deployment covers Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka and is based on AXGP technology, an evolution of the PHS system, which the company says is highly compatible with LTE TDD. SoftBank is running its LTE TDD program through its Wireless City Planning division. The new 4G network operates in parallel with the company’s existing 42 Mbps DC-HSPA+ network.
The first device offered by the company is the "ULTRA WiFi 4G SoftBank 101SI” manufactured by Seiko Instruments, which is a portable router that can support peak downlink speeds up to 76 Mbps and up to 10 WiFi-connected devices simultaneously. [continues after image]
