The Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) presents this new update report (published September 22, 2011). Key findings from several recent GSA reports are highlighted.
Mobile broadband continues to develop and succeed at a phenomenal pace. 100% of the world's WCDMA operators have deployed HSPA on their networks, which was achieved in under 6 years.
Migration to HSPA+ was the major trend in 2010 and continues in 2011 with increasing peak speeds both on the downlink and uplink. 33% of HSPA operators have deployed HSPA+
2011 is developing as a very good year for LTE, with ever-growing operator commitments to deploy networks, more commercial launches, and the future roadmap of LTE-Advanced gaining official approval from the ITU as an IMT-Advanced (4G) technology. The pace of development for LTE and network deployments has speeded up in 2011. In addition to newly licensed spectrum becoming available for LTE (sub 1 GHz digital dividend, and 2.6 GHz) a significant momentum is building for deploying LTE systems in re-farmed 1800 MHz spectrum as a strategy of interest to many operators.

GSA presents the Key Findings from its latest HSPA Devices survey.
The survey confirms that 3,227 HSPA-enabled user devices are launched in the market by 264 suppliers, comprising handsets, smartphones, PC datacards and modules, HSPA-enabled notebooks, netbooks and tablets, USB modems, wireless routers, Personal Media Players, femtocells, e-book readers, mobile tablets, and cameras. A total of 648 HSPA devices were launched in the past 12 months, representing annual growth of over 25%. Peak downlink speeds range from 1.8 Mbps up to 84 Mbps.
182 HSPA Evolution (HSPA+) products (compared to 50 one year ago) are launched by 35 suppliers, including 71 devices which support 42 Mbps (DC-HSPA+) peak downlink capability.
100 dual-mode GSPA-LTE devices are launched (NOTE: LTE devices which fall back to EV-DO for example, but not HSPA, and single LTE mode devices, are excluded from this figure).
There is a clear trend of increasing speeds in both downlink and uplink directions. The growth in smartphone products is again strongly evident with many more devices supporting navigation functionality and WLAN connectivity.
The survey also confirms that 1,184 HSUPA-capable products are now launched in the market, representing 63.5% annual growth.
Support for all 3G spectrum bands is strongly evident in the survey, not only for the widely-deployed 2100 MHz frequency band, but also for 850 MHz band operation in support of mobile broadband markets in Australia, the Americas, and Asia, plus HSPA devices operating in the 1900 MHz and AWS bands as also used in the Americas. The continually improving availability of UMTS900 (HSPA) devices is again highlighted, with 663 products now launched.
The survey also confirms expansion in the number of HSPA phones which incorporate the Wideband AMR technology (W-AMR)for HD Voice service. Operators are giving HD Voice increasing attention with commercial services now launched on several networks (see related GSA report via the link on the home page). This survey lists the HSPA devices which support HD Voice.

Is 4G Enough? The Impact of Video on Mobile Networks
Presentation given by Ronny A. Haraldsvik, VP of Global Marketing, Bytemobile at CommunicAsia 2011
Context
* Increased demand on capacity requires greater control of networks and the ability to measure the quality of subscribers' mobile video experience.
* Operators need to monitor data rates, resolution and stalling in order to ensure service quality and consistency, reduce churn, and plan tiered services for different subscriber profiles.
* A 4G network does not mean that there will be no strain on capacity. 'Smart capacity' solutions are required in conjunction with data offload, RAN-sharing and backhaul upgrades.

GSA presents the Key Findings from its latest HSPA Devices survey which was completed on April 21, 2011.
The survey confirms that 3,071 HSPA-enabled user devices are launched in the market by 262 suppliers, comprising handsets, smartphones, PC datacards and modules, HSPA-enabled notebooks, netbooks and tablets, USB modems, wireless routers, Personal Media Players, femtocells, e-book readers, mobile tablets, and cameras. A total of 722 HSPA devices were launched in the past 12 months, representing annual growth of over 30%. Peak downlink speeds range from 1.8 Mbps up to 84 Mbps.
144 HSPA Evolution (HSPA+) products are included, including 45 devices which support 42 Mbps (DC-HSPA+) peak downlink capability.
53 dual-mode HSPA-LTE devices have been launched (LTE devices which fall back to EV-DO for example, but not HSPA, and single LTE mode devices are excluded from this figure).
There is a clear trend of increasing speeds in both downlink and uplink directions. The growth in smartphone products is again strongly evident with many more devices supporting navigation functionality and WLAN connectivity.
The survey also confirms that 1,069 HSUPA-capable products are now launched in the market, representing over 75% annual growth.
The significantly improving availability of UMTS900 (HSPA) devices is also highlighted, with 618 products now launched (almost double the number of products in the market one year ago).
The survey also identified growth in the number of HSPA user devices which incorporate Wideband AMR technology (W-AMR)for HD Voice service. Operators are giving HD Voice increasing attention with commercial services on several networks now launched. This survey lists HSPA devices which support the HD Voice feature.

This update of the GSA Evolution to LTE report confirms 128 firm LTE network deployments are planned or in progress in 52 countries, including 17 systems which have commercially launched. A further 52 operators are engaged in LTE pilot trials or technology tests, ahead of formal commitments to commercial service deployment (these are referred to as pre-commitment trials).
Taken together, it means that 180 operators in 70 countries are now investing in LTE.
The number of operators investing in LTE deployments or trials has increased by more than 140% over the past 12 months. The number of countries where LTE systems are deployed or planned has increased by 85% in the same period.
LTE operator commitments are developing faster than they did for HSPA, which until now had been the fastest developing mobile system.
The Evolution to LTE report, which covers both FDD and TDD modes, is researched and published by the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), and provides a concise update of the business drivers, objectives and targets for LTE - Long Term Evolution and the evolved packet system, standardized by 3GPP and now in commercial service, including network operator commitments and deployment/launch plans, trials, the growing eco-system including device and platforms availability, spectrum requirements and developments, Voice over LTE developments, some recent industry forecasts regarding LTE, and official designation by the ITU of LTE-Advanced as an IMT-Advanced system standard.

In this presentation, Elisa of Finland describes LTE1800 (LTE deployed in the 1800 MHz band) as promising and available for mass market in time.
The main motivation is that coverage is 2 x larger than when deploying LTE in the 2.6 GHz band. Also - terminal availability is estimated by Elisa to be 6 - 12 months after LTE2600, therefore not a real issue.

The announcement by GSA of the 7.2 Mbps benchmark prompted the question from a number of industry players about what the next baseline might be, when, and why. In other words, what would be the mainstream mobile broadband technology capabilities – interpreted as meaning more than 100 networks in service, with a supporting eco-system of several hundred user devices in the market.
GSA launched an industry-wide global survey lasting 10 weeks, via its website and on the ground at conferences, etc. to obtain industry views first-hand, from operators, suppliers and other stakeholders in mobile broadband. The results are contained in this report.

The 3rd Generation (3G) was established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in a programme called IMT-2000 (International Mobile Telecommunications 2000). The Radio Sector of ITU (ITU-R) defined the performance characteristics, established a process for selection, and eventually accepted candidates as part of this family of standards, which included UTRA FDD (WCDMA). In looking to define the next i.e. 4th Generation it is logical that the ITU should again be responsible for establishing the process and ultimately deciding which candidates meet the minimum requirements for acceptance. The process commenced in early 2008 with the invitation to standardization bodies to prepare proposals which the ITU will consider during 2009. The end result will be publication of an ITU recommendation containing a description of the successful radio interface candidates. In parallel to this process, the full standardization of each candidate system will continue in bodies such as 3GPP, which is focusing on the evolution of LTE i.e. LTE-Advanced.

Next Generation Broadband Forum program http://www.communicasia.com/NGBF_forum.htm#day2
Synopsis:
Although most mobile broadband networks operate at frequencies around 2100 MHz, the use of lower frequencies such as 900 MHz or 850 MHz would provide larger coverage in rural areas and improved indoor penetration in urban areas. The availability of “digital dividend” spectrum in the 470–862 MHz bands resulting from the migration from analogue to digital terrestrial TV will provide similar opportunities. What’s the status of commercial launches of mobile broadband at lower frequencies and how are regulatory regimes evolving to accommodate these options?

GSA presentation on the GSM Association Digital Dividend Pavilion at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, charting the phenomenal growth of HSPA-enabled mobile broadband globally, and showing how personal broadband for all would become reality by using the Digital Dividend for mobile broadband services.
The ITU World Radiocommunication Conference WRC-07 allocated the upper UHF sub-band of 790-862 MHz to Mobile Service for IMT services use on a Primary basis in Region 1, which includes Europe, Africa, Middle East, Russia, and CIS. These frequencies provide excellent coverage and performance characteristics for extending mobile broadband to rural and semi-urban areas, and also for improving in-building coverage, as proven by several commercial HSPA deployments around the world in the 850 MHz and 900 MHz bands.
The success of mobile broadband and future demand expectations, combined with the existing strong political momentum e.g. in Europe, needs to convert into early decisions by regulators to allocate these frequencies for mobile broadband services. Finland, France, Sweden and Switzerland are the first countries to confirm that they will allocate 790–862 MHz for mobile broadband services. Harmonization of this band for mobile broadband services, and expediency, are key to ensuring lowest costs and fastest time to market.

Report: US 700 MHz Spectrum and Auction 73 Results, with Conclusions and Observations
This comprehensive report follows the auction in the US by the FCC of spectrum in the 700 MHz band.
The 700 MHz band becomes available as a result of the impending transition to digital TV.
The Auction lasted for 38 days and 261 rounds, raising revenues of USD 19.1 billion (excluding D block), which is almost twice the amount that Congress budgeted. 700 MHz is a global band as defined at WRC 2007, which is suitable for wireless broadband multimedia services and allows global roaming, interoperable applications and economies of scale.
The report was prepared for GSA by Mark Racek, Office of Public Affairs and Regulations, Ericsson Inc., and summarizes the background to the sale, what spectrum was offered, license rules and requirements, the detailed Auction results, and provides key conclusions and observations.

Many governments are working today to develop and implement Universal Access
programs for telecommunications and information infrastructure for rural and
low-income areas in the emerging markets, including Africa, Asia, India and
Latin America. Mobile communications is the most sensible and effective
response to bridging the digital divide. The worldwide economies of scale of
GSM/EDGE and WCDMA/HSPA technologies enable a continuous reduction in Total
Cost of Ownership, so that data services can ultimately be delivered to a
mass market. The open standards roadmap, which continues with 3GPP LTE,
ensures continuing efficiency and cost benefits.
