The 705 passengers and crew who were rescued after the sinking of the Titanic, 100 years ago this month, owed their lives to the new technology of wireless telegraphy. Without it, no-one would have survived and we would not know where the wreck now lies.

By arrangement with respected independent consultancy organization Arvani Group, we provide their insightful report from CES, Las Vegas, January 10-13, 2012.
Introduction by Arvani Group.
According to the show's organizing committee, CES had over 150,000 attendees and introduced 20,000 products.
Our focus was on mobile and wireless devices and technologies, a sector that is increasing its presence at the show. As one executive put it, the show has become the wireless CES.
With connectivity as a prevelant feature of emerging consumer electronics, transfer of content and controls across devices was a major trend at this year's CES. We look at the advantages and disadvantages of this trend.
Touch, voice and gesture based interfaces are showing up in variety of applications. We summarize our favorites.
We chaired the panel on Planet of the Apps, joined by executives from AT&T, eBay, Sport Illustrated, and MEDL Mobile. The panel discussed the latest trends and ways to stay ahead of the pack.
Intel was all about Ultrabooks at this CES. What purpose will the Ultrabooks serve?
We also bring to you the latest smartphone and tablet introductions. What Microsoft was showing with Windows 8, and developments on machine to machine, and more.

Not only was GSM one of the last of the big EU industrial policy interventions it turned out to be its most successful – a text book case of how to create wealth, jobs, know-how and huge consumer benefits from intervening in the future directions of national infrastructures on a co-ordinated EU wide basis.
This is a new free book by Stephen Temple CBE based upon an account he recorded at the time of what exactly was going on behind the scenes that led to Europe coming behind the GSM initiative that ignited the mobile phone revolution.
Whilst is is largely an historical account which will be of interest to many, it may also be useful today to show Governments just how they can help industry by creating new opportunities. So the last chapter of the book is - could Europe create another GSM?
The objective of the author is to place on public record a great piece of European industrial history and one of Europe's most successful high technology projects.

2008 was the year of HSPA, with strong growth in network deployments and terminal availability. 2009 will see a move to HSPA+.
The first Evolved HSPA (HSPA+) systems are now entering commercial service, with the capability of supporting 21 Mbps peak on the downlink using 64QAM modulation. Peak downlink speeds this year are expected to reach 42 Mbps peak when 2x2 MIMO is added. An evolution of the uplink data speeds will also occur, from 2 Mbps and 5.8 Mbps which we have today with HSPA, to 11.5 Mbps (using 16QAM), and higher with MIMO. LTE is the next evolutionary step, continuing the GSM tradition of delivering even greater efficiencies, capacity, features and performance by evolution as the cornerstone for reducing delivery cost and total cost of ownership, continuing growth, investment, and commercial success.

As HSPA penetration grew, mobile broadband came of age in 2007. Dozens of networks
launched, the technology matured and devices became mainstream. But that’s not the
whole story. WCDMA growth is being boosted by migration to new frequency bands, EDGE
is supporting service continuity and the GSM family as a whole is reaching new milestones.
These achievements have been promoted and supported throughout the year by the Global
mobile Suppliers Association (GSA).

The next stage of the evolution of GSM is in progress, with deployments of HSDPA under way
in a number of markets, ushering in a new era in mobile broadband. But GSM had another
important role in 2006, bringing basic communications to under-served populations.
Promoting both these aspects of the world’s favourite mobile standard have this year been
central to the Global mobile Suppliers Association’s work in supporting, informing and
advising industry and policymakers.

As GSM subscriber numbers power towards the second billion and WCDMA take-up accelerates, there is much to celebrate. However, as the activities of the Global mobile Suppliers Association during 2005 make clear, there is also a continuing need to spread the word about the benefits and opportunities of GSM and its continuing development.
