July 2003 GSM AND GPRS AND EDGE AND WCDMA: Q AND A
The Global Mobile suppliers Association (GSA) estimates that more than 40 GSM operators have committed to deploy EDGE, beginning in North America and extending to APAC, South America and, most recently, Western and Eastern Europe. GSA president Alan Hadden explains why he and the GSA believe the globalisation of EDGE is well under way.

February 18, 2003 LOOKING OVER THE EDGE
Earlier this week over 160 operators and vendors gathered on the Siemens boat to discuss the potential for the EDGE technology. The EDGE Operator Forum meeting organised by the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) heard that over 19 operators around the world have already publicly committed to EDGE and many more in Asia, Latin America and Europe are expected to pledge their support in the near future.

February 18, 2003 THE CASE FOR EDGE
EDGE has moved up in the thinking of many GSM operators around the world in evolving their 3G services offer. The first commercial networks will launch in the Americas in early 2003, and numerous commitments to deploy EDGE have been announced, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. Multi-band EDGE phones for the 850/1800/1900 MHz bands have been announced. The first international call using EDGE handsets has been made. Several operators in Europe are now undertaking EDGE trials.

January 28, 2003 PROMOTING PROGRESS
With a defined roadmap to 3G and the success of SMS paving the way for MMS growth, the path to the next growth phase of GSM seems clear. But, as the Global Mobile Suppliers Association is aware, success is not automatic. It requires planning, encouragement and support.

January 28, 2003 A FUTURE IN THE BALANCE?
2002 was not a good year for the mobile communications industry. The media hammered 3G at every opportunity, operators and vendors suffered from continuous downward pressure on their share prices, and the end of the year saw the resurrection of the mobile health scare. Against this backdrop how did GSM fare? Will the problems outweigh the promise? And what does 2003 hold for GSM?

October 8, 2002 GPRS ALONE WILL NOT HANDLE 3G HANDOVER
There is little doubt that Europe is ahead of the USA in terms of W-CDMA. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that the US is actually behind in terms of 3G technology (not counting the low-speed cdma2000 1x service). EDGE is a 3G technology and has, to date, only been revealed as part of the evolutionary strategy of US operators, but that could soon change. - Lifted from 3G Bulletin, a visiongain publication.
