A major new survey published today by GSA – the Global mobile Suppliers Association, highlights good examples of 3G services from operators around the world in a number of categories: mobile broadband, mobile advertising, social networking, place shifting and mobile search.
The survey looks at services and applications from mobile network operators in Europe. Part 1 covers Finland, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and UK.
Part 2 covers Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland, and UK
Research for the survey was carried out by Ovum Ltd during Q3 2007 and is distributed by exclusive agreement with GSA. The surveys are available for download at http://www.gsacom.com/gsm_3g/surveys.php4
The key findings of the research are:
- HSPA services provide users with a “broadband experience” on mobile. Together with good devices and flat rate tariffs, this has taken 3G to an inflection point for growth
- We can expect very rapid uptake of mobile broadband services from here on, provided tariffs are reasonable * There are some good applications already in use and, as take-up and usage increase, we can expect much more energy to go into application development
- There is good evidence that people will largely take their PC-based usage of the web onto mobile, with applications such as social networking and media sharing providing strong drivers
- The bulk of the revenue is so far in access and traffic, with high potential from advertising and search although they are currently in their early stages
Research will be updated on a quarterly basis from Q1 2008, and it is intended to identify new services to expand the scope. Other regions of the world will also be included in future surveys.
